What We Do
Northwest Farmers Union is a grass-roots organization that works to protect the social and economic well-being of family farmers throughout the Pacific Northwest.
National Farmers Union started in Point, Texas in 1902. The first meeting of a Farmers Union local in the northwest convened in 1907 at Waitsburg, Washington. That first organization quickly moved into the strong wheat belts of Washington which carried the momentum into the northwest states of Idaho and Oregon.
The representation and concentration in the northwest has risen and fallen over the succeeding years in concert with the the effects of the fluctuating economy, evolution in agriculture, and political changes. There were many years of stagnation for Farmers Union in the northwest until the early 80's when a new group of leaders stepped forward and pushed for a chartered division in the northwest. In the decade or so to follow, as the numbers increased, the region was separated into individual chapters in Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.
More than 100 years since the first Farmers Union presence was made in Washington state, we have once again joined forces as the region of the northwest and stand united as the Northwest Farmers Union.
A strong fire is burning in the Northwest Farmers Union to be remembered as a time when the organization rose from single states to unite together to form a stronger more diversified organization. One that will be remembered for differences made and lives changed; a true stamp on the Northwest for years to come!
Our members are our policy makers. We engage elected officials on issues that come directly from our membership and press lawmakers to implement and enforce laws and regulations that will strengthen agriculture in the northwest.
Northwest Farmers Union’s membership is as diverse as the agricultural landscape in our state and includes grain farmers, vegetable growers, fruit growers, livestock farmers and dairy farmers. All our members play a role in bringing the issues that matter most to lawmakers and fighting for their rights as family farmers.
Northwest Farmers Union is a home for all family farmers who are committed to conserving our state’s natural bounty – whether they are long-established or beginning their agricultural journey.
Northwest Farmers Union has been the voice of family farmers, rural residents and consumers across the Hoosier State since our founding. We believe the needs of the northwest's farm economy are every bit as important as the policy priorities of Wall Street and Corporate America. We are the dedicated voice of family farming, and we aim to preserve a sustainable economy that benefits each of us where we live, while providing domestically grown, healthy choices for consumers.
