WASHINGTON STATE (MAY. 17, 2017) - Northwest Farmers Union (NWFU) Secretary Tiffany Wright hosted a gathering of college students to discuss issues pertinent to NWFU and the students’ priorities in agriculture. The meeting was attended by students from both Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) and Blue Mountain Community College, with WWCC already home to a collegiate chapter of NWFU. Both colleges are strong towards agriculture and are within an hour drive of one another.
Laken Berlin an agriculture student at BMCC was quoted as saying, “This is definitely an organization that a lot of Ag students at BMCC would be interested in.”
NWFU established a collegiate chapter at WWCC in 2016 and has had collegiate members attend various events, such as the College Conference on Cooperatives and National Farmers Union Women’s Conference, on their behalf in consecutive years. Issues affecting beginning farmers and ranchers today is a priority of NWFU and that is why they are committed to working with students to provide them with a united voice in addition to excellent educational opportunities.
NWFU President and WWCC alumni spoke about the event saying, “Having two quality agriculture community colleges so close to one another makes it an ideal place for NWFU to grow our collegiate members and gain a fresh understanding of the issues that our young and beginning farmers and ranchers are facing each year; plus its exceptional to get our experienced members with our youth so that both can benefit from one another.”
Additional meetings will be held by NWFU throughout the year. If anyone wants to learn more about the organization or have a meeting held in your home town please contact us through the NWFU website www.nwfu.org
Northwest Farmers Union is working to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities through advocating grassroots-driven policy positions adopted by its membership.
2016 NWFU Convention Speaker Donn Teske (NFU VP)
Ma and I and 4 kids and 6 grandkids operate a fifth-generation beef cow/calf operation on the native Bluestem pastures on the east edge of the Flint Hills in Northeast Kansas at Wheaton, in Pottawatomie county. We crop a little between the rocks….
From 1973 until 1994 we farmed full time on the family farm. Much of that time involved in dairying.
I am in my fifteenth year as Kansas Farmers Union president and very much enjoy representing the organization. I am in my 3rd year as National Farmers Union Vice President. Previous to VP I served 3 years as NFU Treasurer.
Previous to my position as KFU president I worked for the Kansas Rural Center for five years and also for Kansas State University Ag Econ as a farm analyst for five years.
In the summer of 2010 I had the opportunity to work with the village of Keur Ali Gueye in Senegal Africa on their millet production. It was a life-changing experience for me.
I’m involved in a boatload of committees, both associated with Farmers Union and others, but all involve rural quality of life or history, my two passions.
