WASHINGTON STATE (MAY. 1, 2017) - Northwest Farmers Union (NWFU),an agriculture advocacy organization that falls under the umbrella of the National Farmers Union and makes up the states of Washington Idaho and Oregon is supportive of Fair Trade agreements for farmers and ranchers. Recent topics like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Country of Origin Labeling have brought about many questions to farm groups like the NWFU.

If NAFTA were to be renegotiated and/or replaced it would be beneficial to have a Fair Trade agreement that allows farmers and ranchers to receive prices at or above the minimum costs of production and a living wage. Farmers and ranchers should not be forced to compete against one another in a race to who can get there first in selling their products. In addition, good farming practices that give those in agriculture the ability to exercise their preferences on genetically modified contents, pesticides, labeling options and the right to sell local

should be allowed and promoted

Northwest producers often see products coming and going across the U.S./Canadian border that raise the questions of what the cost is of those products and how they are being labeled? In past years a farmer/rancher’s ability to label his or her products as produced and processed in the U.S. has been limited or taken away.  When Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) was removed it started a big question mark of where a person’s meat is coming from. NWFU supports the consumers’ right to know where their food comes from and a producer’s right to label it.
